The ACT's Health Infrastructure Program allocated $1 billion over 10 years for capital infrastructure works designed to meet future health demands in the ACT. A major element of the Program was the redevelopment and upgrade of campus-wide infrastructure at the Canberra Hospital. The Staging and Decanting project was part of those activities and was a key enabling activity.
The project involved two major milestones:
Staging and Decanting Works
Demolition of spaces, fitouts of wards, health services and administrative spaces, and relocation to facilitate the complete decant of Building 3. This enabled the demolition of the building to prepare for the construction of a new major clinical facility.
Paediatric Streaming Works
Refurbishment of an area of the Emergency Department to create a separate waiting area and reception for paediatric patients and families accessing these hospital services.
The major challenge was to ensure the operation of the hospital was not interrupted by the Staging and Decanting works, in particular critical services provided by the Emergency Department.
